Our Stained Glass Windows.

We have five wonderful stained glass windows in our Church. The most impressive is our east window (W01) which depicts St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Luke, St. John, St. Mark and St. Matthew. But in addition we have another four on our north and south balconys.

W01

This is an extract of a painting of the interior of St. Peters Church by Bernard Tumalti painted in 1844.

Apart from showing the number of box pews and original lighting, it also shows that our East Window (W01) was originally of plain clear glass, before its replacement in the late 19th century.

W01

Stained glass window with four lancets in the east wall in the centre of the sanctuary (W01), depicting the four evangelists and Apostles Peter and Paul. The coat of arms of the Smith family are depicted at the top. Blazon: Argent on a bend two bulls erased azure armed or, three lozenges or. Motto: Delectat amor patriae. (Blazon quoted from Séamus Bellew, Drogheda Churches: Heraldry and Memorial Inscriptions.

Inscription at the bottom: “In memory of St George Smith born March 7th 1786 died March 4th 1873”.

W02

Stained glass window with two lights in the south wall (W02), depicting the agony in the garden of Gethsemane (left light) and the appearance at the road to Emmaus (right light).

The lower lights quote Luke 22:42 “not my will, but thine be done” and Luke 24:29 “Abide with us [..] the day is far spent.”

Inscription: “In memory of Joseph Dean born August 13th 1825 – died August 2nd 1894”.

Joseph Dean was a merchant, residing at West street in Drogheda.

W03

Stained glass window with two lights in the south wall (W03), depicting the Parable of the Good Samaritan (left light) and Dorcas's Good Works (right light).

The angels in the bottom panels hold scrolls with references to the scripture: “Saint Luke Chapter X Verses 33–34” and “Acts of the Apostles Chapter IX Verse 36”.

Signature in the lower panel of the left light: “J. B. CAPRONNIER BRUXELLENSIS FECIT 1876”.

Inscription: “In memory of Harriette Eccles wife of the Rev. John Eccles M.A. rector of this parish who died July 29th 1874 erected by members of the congregation and other friends”

W05

Stained glass window with two lights in the north wall (W05) in memory of Frances Sophia Dyas (1849–1884), quoting Job 1:21. Decorated with a dove holding a branch in the top light and Alpha and Omega in the lower sections.

W07

Stained glass window with two lights in the north wall (W07), depicting the women at the empty tomb, following the description of Matthew 28:1–3, 5–6: “In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: [..] And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.”
